What is Roulette?

Roulette is a game where a tiny ball is spun around a roulette wheel. The ball falls into 1 of 38 numbered and colored pockets. Players win depending on what they wagered before the croupier spins the wheel. Refer to this image of an American Roulette wheel while you read the next section.

How to Play Roulette

The player makes wagers before each spin of the roulette wheel. In roulette, winning wagers are dependent on where the ball lands. Players can make either Inside or Outside wagers:

Inside Wagers

Straight or Single – Player bets on a single number 00 and 0 up to 36.

Split – Bet on 2 vertical or horizontal numbers. A player could place a chip on the line between the 10 and 13.

Street – Bet on 3 numbers in a horizontal line. Placing a chip next the 12 is a street bet on the 10, 11, 12.

Corner or Square – Bet on the four numbers that touch at a corner. One corner on the roulette wheel is 2,3,5,6. Players place a chip on the intersection point.

Double Street or Six Line – Bet on 2 streets. A wager on the 1,2,3,4,5,6 is an example of this type of bet.

Trio – A trio bet is a wager that includes either the 0 or 00: 0,1,2, or 0,2,3, or 00,2,3.

First Four – A bet that includes the 0,1,2,3.

Basket – A bet that includes the 00,0,1,2,3

Outside Wagers

1 to 18 or 19 to 36 – Bets that the ball will drop into a pocket in the chosen range.

Red or Black – A wager that the pocket will be red or black.

Even or Odd – A wager that the number will be even or odd.

Dozen Bet – A wager that the number will be in 1 of the 3 chosen dozens: 1 to 12, 13 to 24, or 25 to 36.

Column Bet – A bet that the number will be in the chosen column.

Roulette Strategy

Because odds change depending on the wager, consider odds before making any bets. The easiest wagers in roulette are on odd or even numbers and on red or black. Since both pay even money, you can develop a sound roulette strategy by just playing red or black and odd or even.

Be sure to understand that the house has a better than even money edge on simple strategy roulette. The green 0 and green 00 means that there’s a chance on every spin that the ball falls into a non-red or non-black or non-even or non-odd numbered pocket.

Once you get used to playing roulette, you can experiment with wagers that pay out more than even money like street, corner, and six line wagers.
